My specialty since 2002 has been in treating pregnant and parenting women. There are a variety of relationship issues that are common during this time of transition as my clients work to integrate a new baby into their family. I also work with women who develop Postpartum depression/anxiety. I further specialize in working with women struggling with addiction to alcohol or other drugs as well as those suffering with an eating disorder. There are a variety of substances that people can abuse/become dependent on which cause relational and other life issues. The drugs of abuse and dependence that I am familiar with treating in early/middle/late abstinence and recovery include:
Alcohol, Amphetamines - Methamphetamine, CocaineOpiates - Heroin, Vicodin, Oxycontin, Codeine, Morphine, Dilaudid, FentanylOther Non-Opiate Sedatives/Benzodiazepines: Valium, Ativan, Soma, Klonopin, Xanax, Marijuana, PCP and GHB.
While I do not treat actively using clients, I do treat clients struggling with recovery (staying clean) and those who are working on abstaining from illicit substances/substances that are legal (like alcohol) which cause life and relationship difficulties. There are certain characteristics that are common with the different classes of drugs. For instance, many of my alcohol abusing clients also suffer from anxiety and depression. Substance abusers often have other co-occurring DSM-IV diagnoses or symptoms. Bulimia, Anorexia, Binge Eating/Overeating are common co-existing issues with alcohol or other drug addiction. Sometimes the removal of the substance allows a client to resume previous functioning and other times further mental illness/difficulties in life functioning are revealed.
